Holy Family
Holy Family
Background: Holy Family After School Program is a branch of the ministries that Holy Family Lutheran Church does in conjunction with their program titled, “Hope Alive” which serves to create a better living environment for children and all youth living in low-income neighborhoods.
The church is located in the housing neighborhood of Cabrini Green, a low-income housing area that is it a great transitional period, including the destruction of many buildings. The church is located on 542 W. Hobbie St, in Chicago. North Park students have been tutoring at Hope Alive for over three years.
Focus: Tutoring neighborhood kids including non English-speaking recent refugees.
Our Role (what we actually do there - give as much detail as is helpful. Remember when you first started what kind of information would have been helpful to you as a new PC or SL?): Northparkers are assigned a group of 2-5 kids per volunteer, for a whole semester/year. We help these kids, Chicago public school kids some of whom can barely speak English, with their homework, English language skills, etc.
Site Rating: This site is particularly beneficial to those interested in learning more about those coming from a different background and in a different environment, in an easily accessible way, through children.
