YOURS

YOURS - Youth Orchestra Uptown Rita Simo

Background: The People's Music School is a free music school based in the Uptown neighborhood for 32 years. The school primarily serves low-income students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to formally study music. The People’s Music School developed a program called the Youth Orchestra Uptown Rita Simo (YOURS), with the mission of developing social, cultural, and intellectual skills through an orchestral music training program. The YOURS project will focus on serving children living in at-risk situations, such as in homeless shelters and low-income neighborhoods. This education will take place in a loving and nurturing environment where children can grow to reach their full potential as healthy and responsible human beings.

Focus: This year North Park musicians will be teaching at Cornerstone’s Sylvia Center, Boys and Girls Club of Chicago and Hibbard School. Through the disciplined study of music, students also learn organization, consistency, persistence, respect, and solidarity. Teaching music entails encouraging and nurturing not only their musical talent, but also their values and self esteem. This will enable them to overcome many of the degrading and hopeless conditions which they face daily to find a new life of beauty, love, and dreams through music -- to have a better chance to realize their full potential as human beings and citizens.
