Breakthrough
Breakthrough Urban Ministries
History: Based in Chicago, Breakthrough operates programs on the city's north and west sides. These include homeless centers and services for men and women, a street outreach to women in prostitution, and a youth & family outreach program.
Breakthrough Urban Ministries was founded in 1992 by Arloa Sutter and members of the First Evangelical Free Church as a response to homeless persons in the Edgewater and Uptown neighborhoods who were seeking assistance.
In addition to serving the homeless, Breakthrough now conducts a wide array of programs for children and youth in the East Garfield Park community to help equip them for future success.
Focus: Students have the option of serving on the following volunteer teams:
· Academics: serve as a tutor to children in the after school program. (Commitment is minimum 1 hr/week plus training and evaluation)
· Athletics: serve as a coach on a variety of teams throughout the year. (Commitment is minimum 2 hrs/week for the duration of a season)
· Bible Study: serve as a leader in our after school Bible study program (Commitment is 2 hrs/week on Monday afternoons for the year)
