Covenant Home
Covenant Home of Chicago, located at 2720 West Foster Avenue was founded in 1886. It serves the community as an assisted living institution with an emphasis on living a fulfilling Christian life post-retirement. The Covenant Retirement Home, Chicago is one of 14 locations nationwide- all of which focus on meeting the same aspects of assisted care living. For our programs, the Covenant Homes provide the perfect location, not only because of their proximity, but also because of the caring Christian environment. The interaction with North Park students is an opportunity that is highly anticipated by many residents. Many of the residents not only have relatives who currently attend North Park University, but many were also students themselves. Students serve in multiple programs operated through the Covenant home, including tutoring, special events, and coffee time.
Coffee Hour: Meets generally twice per week, for an hour each meeting; Students are only committed to attend one session per week. In a large group setting, Students and Residents gather together to share conversation and coffee/juice provided by the Covenant Home.
Computer Training: entails the pairing of a North Park student and a Resident of the Covenant Home. Student and Resident meet at their convenience, as directed through the events coordinator at the Covenant Home, Kathleen Sharkey, via phone calls or email. (Information on contacting each other will be attained through the program coordinator.) Student is responsible for arriving at the appointed time, tutoring Resident for approximately an hour, as many times a month as desired, generally bi-weekly. Student will have direct contact with program coordinator in order to complete requirements for North Park University Ministries program (ie: timesheets, TB tests).
Special Events: meet approximately once per month at the Covenant Home. Students will be notified via email or daily announcements as to the time and nature of the event a significant amount of time before the event takes place. Similar to Coffee Time, Special Events reaches out to the same retirement facility, but time is structured and events are scheduled at the convenience of the Covenant Home. Events are designed to encourage interaction between Students and Residents, without dependence on unstructured conversation. Typical events include holiday parties, sharing music, playing board games, etc.
